How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

MBS Sentul OBA

has certainly progressed tremendously under the helm of some hardworking and dedicated committee members recently. Last Saturday evening, it has just celebrated its Golden Jubilee with a subscription dinner attended by some 700 people, at HGH Convention Centre which is just outside the school in Jalan Sentul.

From what I gathered from ex-student (year 1967) and ex-teacher (1974-78), Low Han Bon, who happened to be in town (he resides in Perth, Australia), it was attended by mainly former students and some ex-teachers like him. Our ex-teachers included Low Thin Wing, Lee Hung Yen, Ms Pathma, Amos, and others. Octogenarian, Ng Sek Kong, who I used to meet in Amcorp Mall, PJ, was there too.

Tickets were priced at Rm800, Rm3,000 and Rm5,000 per table and a commemorative magazine (without sponsors) sold at Rm100 each! There was a live band and Tan Sri Azman Hashim sang 4 songs: English, Malay, Mandarin and even Tamil or Hindi (not sure of the order nor the titles of the songs, as Han Bon is not a musician nor a wannabe like me), because he was caught amid the chatter among long lost friends and ex-students.

I can still remember Chan Weng Chiu was President of OBA for so many years that he was referred to jokingly as President for life. Then there was a period of lack of interest among old boys. There was one meeting which was held in our house turned office in Jalan Pipit! It was attended by my late brother, Ong Hock Boh, P. Venugopal (now Datuk, and present President of OBA), Danny Ooi (now Datuk, known for being founder of Malaysia Book of Records), Chung Chee Kin (who later worked in a service centre of former Deputy Minister, Dr. Tan Tee Kwong), and a few others.

Thanks to Tan Sri Azman, OBA has its own premises behind the school building. I cannot help comparing with my wife's alma mater, SMK Sultan Yussuf in Batu Gajah, which has yet to put up its own building, despite having a piece of land within Taman Changkat for many years! Many of its old pupils (theirs is known as Old Pupils Association) complained about its office being in Ipoh! Their old pupils included Sultan Azlan Shah, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah of Sunway Group, among many other well known personalities.

Anyway, I expect more detailed reports and pictures from those in charge at this site:

A reply from the President of OBA:

Dear Ong

It was a very pleasant surprise hearing from you after such a long time.Thank you for the good wishes to the OBA Committee.

I remember the meeting, though not the actual year, in your late brother's house in Jalan Pipit, which was close to my parent's house in Kg Kasipillay.I will never forget Hock Boh who was such a wonderful person, always so cheerful, friendly, helpful and obliging and a staunch supporter of the OBA.Just for the record I retired from the Ministry of Health in March 1998..

You are right. I've been a President of the OBA for a long time from 1983 till now.I've announced my decision to resign at the next AGM in early 2011. Time for the younger more energetic old boys to take over from me.

By God's grace the Golden Jubilee Dinner on Oct 30th was a success with about 700 people attending the function. We also had about 20 retired teachers present.Pity you could not make it.

All the best to you in your job at Batu Gajah.
