How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Tronoh DAP fund-raising dinner in Pusing

I attended DAP's fund-raising dinner hosted by Tronoh ADUN, YB Sivakumar, last night. It is amusing how I got the ticket: my wife (MCA life member but read not for life) bought one from YB when he was on his round in Pusing! She thought I would have bought one myself (assumption, like always, without bothering to call me to find out), and so she gave it to me to attend.

The main banner showed Lim Guan Eng, Hew Kuan Yau, Nga Kor Ming, Ngeh Koo Ham, Sivakumar and Lim Pek Har, and a bunting showing ex-MB of Perak, Nizar. 'As advertised', all made it to the dinner (not necessarily for the dinner), because the last to arrive was YAB Lim Guan Eng who came past 10 pm when we had our dessert!

Being host, Siva was there early to greet the arriving guests. Pek Har was sighted before the dinner. Late arrivals of YBs was in the order of Ngeh, then Nga, and towards the end of the dinner, Nizar.

Nizar was on stage delivering his speech when Guan Eng arrived (to the accompaniment of DAP's party song) and most of the dinner guests were distracted and there were those who lined the way in, eager to shake his hands. Nizar was quick to adapt to the situation by announcing the arrival of Penang Chief Minister... and even sang DAP's song! After finishing his speech, Nizar greeted Guan Eng with two hugs!

The main theme of the speeches was to win back Perak from BN in the next GE. Sivakumar was addressed as the rightful Speaker while Nizar as the rightful Menteri Besar. Sivakumar related how he (dressed in Speaker's robes in the Perak State Assembly) was forcibly carried by a large group of policemen to a store-room and locked up for an hour so that BN could carry out the farcical session to take over from Pakatan. They tried to take away his robes but he held on until it was torn in two! Proper rules were thrown out when the State Secretary could order the police to manhandle the Speaker! It was the darkest period in Perak history. As Umno Perak chief, PM Najib did the necessary dirty work in two months what Tajol Rosli could not for years. The people in Perak is waiting for the right time to teach Najib a lesson for what he had done to them: engineering the cross-overs of the required number of ADUNs (by hook or by crook) to grab the state. He won the battle in Perak, but the people are now emboldened to aim towards not only winning back Perak, but winning the war in Putrajaya!

Lim Guan Eng in his speech, made it loud and clear that if Pakatan wins in Perak, Nizar will be the Menteri Besar and Sivakumar the Speaker again. Judging from the mood of the people, they can't wait for that to happen!
