How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Why I am paranoid about YES

Just imagine, on a trip to Penang, we went into Gurney Plaza. There was a YES promotion for their dongles, etc. I was attracted to YES because of the 4G tag and the main reason then was to buy and sign up for it for Rm159 (I think) which included the dongle. At the time, there was no coverage in Batu Gajah! The selling point was that I could use it anytime and be charged for what I have used, at 9 sen a minute (thought it was such a bargain to call overseas), and there was to be no 'expiry date'. As it turned out, the 'no expiry' has turned out to be a bane instead of a boon when I decided to terminate the account. I stopped using it when I realized how much I would inadvertently incur since I did not sign up for a data plan. There were horror stories of how new smart phone users were caught soon after using them. Even when my wife was given an iPad as a present and I believe each is entitled to a YES number, waiting to be activated, I advised her not to do so, until I am clear about how they charge or when she is ready to sign up for a data plan. Now, even the new Proton Preve has the same arrangement with YES.

Customers should be made aware if there is any recurrent charges like a minimum of Rm30 per month even if the line is not used, instead of being told that we pay only for what we use. When we are in a shopping complex, are we expected to know or read such unfair conditions? The worst is still the 'no expiry date' which seems like it will never end.
