How many of us really understand what Felda is about, other than a vague idea that it was started by Tun Razak some 40 years ago, and to do with settlers willing to work and live in an agricultural environment?
With its much hyped, as well as much criticized, scheduled listing on Bursa Saham Malaysia, many have tried to explain and make it simple for us ordinary folks, especially the settlers who are the main stakeholders, to understand and hopefully accept the proposal. As usual, we have the opportunistic promoters of the listing spinning about 'durian runtuh' for the settlers, and the critics who tried to prevent the settlers from being cheated with immediate gains and forgoing a lot. As is typical of such mega proposals, regardless of who really gains, we can be sure the merchant bankers will improve their bottom lines and other professionals involved will be laughing all the way to the bank.
We must accept the fact that sometimes we get more confused by over simplification, wrong interpretations and inaccuracies. For example, acres instead of hectares could mean less than half of what it actually is. But facts like the land being leased from the government for 99 years at an incredibly low rate of Rm700 per hectare per year are clear enough and will certainly make us envious as to how easy it is for political leaders to enrich themselves with the power in their hands.
Hopefully, as more and more are written about it, we will be able to say with certainty that we fully understand what it is all about and discuss it with confidence and clarity even in coffee shops.
