How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Why not go for subsidiarity?

According to Wikipedia:

"Subsidiarity is an organizing principle stating that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest, or least centralized competent authority. The Oxford English Dictionary defines subsidiarity as the idea that a central authority should have a subsidiary function, performing only those tasks which cannot be performed effectively at a more immediate or local level. The concept is applicable in the fields of governmentpolitical sciencecyberneticsmanagement, military (Mission Command) and, metaphorically, in the distribution of software module responsibilities in object-oriented programming. Subsidiarity is, ideally or in principle, one of the features of federalism, where it asserts the rights of the parts over the whole..."

If our federal government feels it is better to let states ruled by Pakatan be cut off from federal funds, then it should consider whether incomes from those states be left within them so that they can manage the funds themselves... probably better by prudent financial management.

We had witnessed blatant discrimination in oil royalties being cut off to Kelantan and Terengganu when both states were ruled by PAS. Kelantan remains cut off and now the matter is in the courts. Since then, this vindictive policy has been extended to other issues recently...

Lop-sided contracts in favour of water concessionaires

Come to think of it, individual states could be better managed if they were being forced to look after themselves with good governance and prudent financial management. The BN leadership should rethink if they think punishing the people because of political affiliation and support would help them in the next general election. The people now are unlike before.
