How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Pakatan as a lucrative business...

or an institution which produces people's representatives much in demand by Barisan.

What we have seen of late, were Pakatan's Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen being tempted to cross over to Barisan. Allegations of huge sums were paid to Hee who made the fall of Perak Pakatan possible, after the two who were lured and caught with criminal charges hanging over their heads.

The law seems blurred to most laymen because even the most tight agreement and best statute are subject to judicial interpretation, and the present state of judicial independence (lack of) further complicates matters.

With the latest resignation of Keshvinder from DAP to become so-called Independent, Perak DAP has decided to take legal action against him and Hee, to claim Rm5 million each for breach of contract signed before they stood for election. As usual, there are more than one legal opinion on this course of action and we would not know for sure unless and until it reaches the courts.

The way I see it, if not for the objective of taking over Parliament, Pakatan serves well as a challenger to Barisan's long rule for almost 53 years, and in the process, kept them on their toes despite their arrogance and blatant corruption. I cannot imagine the state of our country without a strong opposition to do that.

We have seen how, in the case of Hee plus two, their importance to the PM which justified their being kept in Casuarina Hotel during the vital period, which involved the partial closure of Jalan Gopeng and tight security provided by the partial Police.

Keshvinder, in contrast, received a mere mention by PM when asked, because of his relative unimportance at this stage.

It would be interesting if DAP can win the case and obtain substantial compensations from the two ex-ADUNs, but most people expect it to be a lost case, judging from the many unfavourable decisions from the judiciary.

But one thing is certain, and that is, Pakatan candidates get the chance to be elected, and when successful, they have the chance of a lifetime to be millionaires if and when their resistance are low and they are open to persuasion. How many of us could earn a million in our lifetime?
