We wish to have long life, but having seen how some old folks got badly treated by their own children, when they were disabled and past their useful expiry dates, we wonder. Even rich patriarch or matriarch would realize too late when most of the properties have been distributed in one way or other.
One night, a young lady was woken up by some screaming. She did not know what happened and her immediate reaction was to activate the car alarm assuming there was one or more bad people outside. When she looked across the road, she saw mother and daughter using a chair to whack father who was aggressive at the time. She could not sleep after witnessing such a sad scenario. But this is an isolated case where a decision has to be made whether to put the old man in a proper place to prevent his aggressive behaviour from harming others.
Generally, most people would work out to maintain a certain level of fitness. But I have seen how some people who took up weight lifting ended up with paunches and loose muscles when they gave up! It would be nice to be able to age gracefully, in terms of appearance and behaviour... and die in a happy state, instead of being bedridden.
My mother gave up soon after her leg was amputated because she was one determined person who would not want others to be inconvenienced because of her disability. I am still carrying the guilt despite having spent weekdays with her when working in KL, and travelling between BG and KL every weekend, for 12 years.
