A friend was caught by police for football betting. Upon his release after a night in police lock-up, was complaining that only now he knows who his real friends are.
He complained about Chinese friends who stayed away when he was in trouble and was wax lyrical about an 'ah long' who helped because of his network of friends in police and lawyers. He said, he also treated him to beer and so on.
Well, I warned him about police crackdown after reading the papers but he was cocky in replying, 'you think I tell people, look here, I am betting...' But when the 'ah long' informed him, it was useful 'tip' from reliable sources which he did not take note. So, to him, a true friend is one who shares his network of friends when he got into trouble in illegal activities and treat him to beer occasionally. I am afraid I am one who discourages him from illegal activities and advised him to cut down on excessive drinking. I am also one who cannot afford to treat him beer since he is such an alcoholic. I must admit, in his books, I am not a friend and I am not losing sleep over that.
