Most, would have been through this at one time or other... as a prospective son-in-law or daughter-in-law, being introduced to future parents-in-law. I have been through it before, and at my present age, have been through as a prospective father-in-law too... though not necessarily successful! My wife used to quote another in a similar situation, 'Don't bring them back unless you are serious with the person!' But nobody can tell how it would turn out later and I am sure the new generation guys and gals have their own problems of matching personalities and careers which could take them far apart for unhealthily long periods.
There are cases where future uncles and aunts were asked for opinions, some gave theirs without having to ask. Generally, once steady, most will be polite enough to give positive opinions unless, by nature, he or she is used to calling a spade a spade. But what a difference it makes when it did not turn out! All the 'I told you so' and 'I knew...', etc. will be heard.
The following story is just one example, and supposed to be funny:
God will provide
A young woman brought her fiancé home to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother told her father to find out about the young man.
The father invited the fiancé to his study for a talk.
"So what do you do for a living?" the father asked the young man.
"I am a biblical scholar," he replied.
"So what do you do for a living?" the father asked the young man.
"I am a biblical scholar," he replied.
"A Biblical scholar. Hmm........", the father said. "Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in?"
"I will study," the young man replied, "and God will provide for us."
"And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?" asked the father.
"I will concentrate on my studies," the young man replied, "God will provide for us."
"And children?" asked the father. "How will you support children?"
"Don't worry Sir, God will provide," replied the fiancé.
The conversation proceeded like this and each time the father questioned, the young idealist insisted that God would provide.
Later, the mother asked, "How did it go Honey?"
"I will study," the young man replied, "and God will provide for us."
