How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

theSun: Poll gone from Tee Keat's blog (excerpts):

PETALING JAYA (June 12, 2009) : A day after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak commented on a public survey on whether should MCA leave Barisan Nasional (BN) the poll had been removed from MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat's blog,

According to the opinion poll, hosted on Ong's blog since August last year, 1,910 (75.6%) of the 2,525 online voters wanted MCA to leave BN.

Yesterday, Najib dismissed the poll as an academic exercise, saying "the MCA has no intention of leaving BN" and that "the political position of MCA has always been, and will continue to be, a senior member of BN".

A source in MCA said although the poll result might be irrelevant now, whether the support of the people especially the Chinese community would return to the party is still a question mark until now.

"For example, the taking over of the Perak government has caused the people to be upset, as a component party, the support for MCA will be affected more or less.

On whether there is still a need for MCA to quit BN, the source said many party leaders including Ong and his deputy Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek had mentioned again and again that it is quite impossible for MCA to leave BN.

"Firstly, it would not be able to survive in the political arena by itself as an independent political party and secondly, it would not give the party any advantage even it chooses to join the Pakatan Rakyat," the source said.

Ong was also quoted yesterday saying that "the matter (to leave BN) did not arise" and the survey was conducted merely for academic purposes.

In connection with Port Klang Free Zone, most people have little hope of seeing justice done, as shown in the following blog post:
zorro-unmasked: MY FRIDAY GUEST BLOGGER: CAPT. YUSOF aka THE ANCIENT MARINER.

He too guns for change, not because he happens to be DSAI's classmate in MCKK. To quote his familiar line, "I've had enough of this shit to last me a lifetime" this retired seaman, calls a spade a spade and not an excavator. On Wednesday night, at the PKFZ forum, he was the only speaker who said this straight from the heart: If nothing happens, I will take class action against the crooks." Brave words, but knowing this man, he aims and shoots and not shoot and then aim. People, he said it in public and now it is in black and white here:
No PAC Probe
Malaysiakini reported late yesterday, here, that the four key players in the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) debacle have been let off the hook by the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and will not be called in for questioning.

The four are former PKFZ general manager OC Phang, former Port Klang Authority chairperson and current Deputy Finance Minister Chor Chee Hueng and two former Transport Ministers Ling Liong Sik and Chan Kong Choy.

The reason?

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is the rightful authority to probe the four. "We feel it is unnecessary," said PAC chairperson Nazri Khalid.

Which passeth all understanding.

At the recent DAP forum PKFZ: Will Heads Roll? I had vowed that if nothing comes to naught with these high profile probes etc., I will take it upon myself, together with a few former Klang Port Authority colleagues, to initiate a class action suit or public interest litigation or whatever to see justice done. We believe that perhaps we do have some measure of locus standi as concerned citizens and former employees of the port to start both criminal and civil proceedings for breach of trust and to recover the monies from those involved in this heinous crime.

Not that we have much faith in the judicial system either.

The game of musical chair continues with the music not stopping towards the end. We, the public are actually at the mercy of the powers that be, and in this case, PKFZ had incurred and likely to continue incurring huge losses to be borne by the taxpayers.
