How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Something on Carla's Way

I chanced upon a BBC World News documentary film on Carla Bruni...

CARLA'S WAY : Birth Of A First Lady
'An exclusive close-up and personal portrait of Carla Bruni Sarkozy in her first year in office as France’s First Lady. Her personality and beauty has attracted a lot of attention from the Media and Public.

Today, beyond her career as a model and as a singer, we will capture how she manages her new role and what mission she has set to herself, how she succeeds with doubts and fights in this very exposed position. The director has been granted free access to follow her on official trips abroad and in the Elysees Palace, offering a unique behind-the-scene look at the realms of power and fame. Witness the rise of a first lady with many facets just before your eyes. '

I tried to write something about it by doing a search... and the information available is really overwhelming.. for instance...

'Following her marriage to Sarkozy, in February 2008, Bruni continued accompanying him on state visits, including to the United Kingdom in March 2008, which created a sensation in the international press and the public in the UK and France. She has an office and staff at her disposal in the East wing of the Élysée Palace. (Now we know why our own First Lady needs her own FLOM!)

Bruni met recently divorced French president Nicolas Sarkozy in November 2007 at a dinner party. After a brief romance they married on 2 February 2008 at the Élysée Palace in Paris. The marriage is Bruni's first and Sarkozy's third. Bruni obtained French nationality not long afterwards. She has since made contradictory statements as to whether she still holds Italian nationality as well.

'We spotted France's first lady Carla Bruni, the reigning queen of First Ladies (where the similarities between her and our own end?), arriving at her hotel, The Carlyle, in New York City...'

(Our FL has her own music videos too!)

To sum up, my impression: Being a First Lady of France, Carla is just like a guest in a palace well run by an army of workers with clear rules as to their chain of authority and responsibilities. The pomp and pageantry are to be expected of a country with a long history and steeped in tradition, which can simply be described as awesome, even to an heiress and singer-songwriter like her. Power can truly be seductive.

Music seems to be the key: The way she met the President of France, through the introduction of someone who knew the way to her heart – music and songs. Apparently, she had the impression that he was too formal and serious and did not want to meet him, until the person arranged a music session for them.

Similarly, in New York, arrangement were made to have her sing a song at a concert and the President even attended her rehearsal.

While in a third world country, and travelling in her official car, she was thrilled when she heard one of her songs played on the radio! Someone must have done research on her and knew what would make her happy!
