How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

All we are saying...give Perak a chance

More than twenty years ago, a relation in his teens had his school painting hanging in his house. I have my 'blindspots' when I write but I am good at spotting mispelt words and so on. He was so embarrassed when I pointed out his 'PERAK' spelt as 'PEARK' that he quickly took it down.

Anyway, for Najib's 100 days, the above post title seems apt amid the glorious sycophantic messages put up by people expecting something in return. Can't blame the businessmen, but Perak state government? Oh, I forgot, thanks to him, Zambry got his Camry which he thinks is too cheapy.

Anyway, John Lennon's song, 'Give peace a chance', comes to mind:

Two, one two three four
Ev'rybody's talking about
Bagism, Shagism, Dragism, Madism, Ragism, Tagism
This-ism, that-ism, is-m, is-m, is-m.

All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance

C'mon
Ev'rybody's talking about Ministers,
Sinisters, Banisters and canisters
Bishops and Fishops and Rabbis and Pop eyes,
And bye bye, bye byes.

All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance

Let me tell you now
Ev'rybody's talking about
Revolution, evolution, masturbation,
flagellation, regulation, integrations,
meditations, United Nations,
Congratulations.

All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance

Ev'rybody's talking about
John and Yoko, Timmy Leary, Rosemary,
Tommy Smothers, Bobby Dylan, Tommy Cooper,
Derek Taylor, Norman Mailer,
Alan Ginsberg, Hare Krishna,
Hare, Hare Krishna

All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance

Patrick Teoh, a Perakian, had this to say:

Today, in 'celebration' of Najib's first 100 days there were 9 full-paged, full colour advertisements taken out in the New Straits Times alone to congratulate the man. Now you do the math. Each full-page, full colour ad costs Rm30,000!!! So okay, those are taken out by corporations who don't really care how they spend shareholders money. But there is also one ad from the state government and the people of the state of Perak!!! Now I wonder how many Perak tax-payers were consulted on how their money should be spent?

Spotted this in Malaysia Today:

100 DAYS HENCE: A DESTROYER HAS EMERGED, NOT A BUILDER

Not only did he alienate the non-Malays with a power grab in Perak, he fractured his own community with his proposals of “unity” with PAS, the second biggest Malay party after Umno.
By Wong Choon Mei, Suara Keadilan

Najib also shattered the integrity of the country’s judiciary with pressure on the courts to dish out extraordinary rulings that have been condemned by the legal fraternity.
While this helped him cling to power in Perak, the seriousness of the loss of confidence in the country and its system has dealt a death-blow that has yet to be fully felt by Malaysians. The repercussions cannot be under-estimated and will reverberate on the economy for years to come.

As for his 1Malaysia slogan, it is better known as 1BlackMalaysia and wearing black has become de rigeur amongst the young and the professional despite a nationwide scare campaign he launched with the help of his cousin, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.
