How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Vote Pakatan for Umno to change

Basically, to have a two-party system, we need to get out of the stranglehold, which Umno has in the political system. Only after that, could we have a system whereby whichever party gets too arrogant will face the boot. Umno promises to change but can we trust them after all the broken promises and arrogance displayed whenever they have the upper hand?

The following top letter in Malaysiakini has all the points, which anyone who wish for a change would like to include in his or her letter. I could not do any better.

Bkt Gantang, vote Pakatan for Umno to change
Vivian Lim Apr 6, 09 4:36pm

This is a heartfelt plea to the Chinese voters of Bukit Gantang. I hope this message gets to them on time, somehow.

Lately you have been inundated with lots of big ‘presents’ from Umno/BN. For fifty years you voted faithfully for them, but you never got this kind of treatment.

Now it is one million ringgit for a Chinese school, land for squatters in Kuala Sepetang, Dr Mahathir Mohamad coming to treat you like VIPS, the list goes on.

Why is this so? Has Umno suddenly become good and kind? Sorry la, no. Najib Abdul Razak may have said nice things recently, and released 13 ISA detainees, but nothing much has really changed.

The ISA laws are still there, the corrupt Umno people are still taking and keeping corrupt money, the police and judges are still corrupt, there is no mention of state elections in Perak.

Umno is still telling your Malay neighbours that Pakatan Rakyat is bad because they (Pakatan) gave land to the Chinese.

Has Umno suddenly struck the lottery and become rich? Well, Umno has been stinking rich for a long time because of the money they took from you and me (Mahathir said 90% of taxes are paid by the Chinese), but they never gave a million ringgit to a Bukit Gantang Chinese school before.

So why is Umno so good now? The correct reason is because you did not vote for them in the last election.

Did Umno give you fantastic goodies when you voted for them? No. In fact they threatened the Chinese in various ways and made them feel unwelcome.

Did they give you big presents when you did not vote for them. Yes, they did, one million ringgit here, land there, VIP treatment etc.

So please don’t forget this vital lesson - Umno only gives things when they want your vote. They don’t care for you when they are sure of your vote.

Do you want Umno to really change for the better? Do you want corruption to end in Umno and Malaysia? Do you want Umno's ill-gotten gains to be returned to the people?

Do you want Najib to keep his promises regarding 1Malaysia? Do you want him to get rid of the ISA?

Tomorrow, April 7, you have the chance to help change things for the better. If you vote for Umno, the message will be ‘the people are stupid and easily taken in by Umno’.

‘Umno can do whatever bad things they want (corruption, kicking out state governments etc) and we will still support them as long as they give us a few peanuts occasionally’.

If you vote for Pakatan, Umno will know that they really have to change if they want your votes. Just a few peanuts and nice words are no longer enough.
