Dancing to 'Get Back' by the Beatles: http://www.beatlestube.net/video.php?title=Get+Back
Happy birthday to us! A scene at Jaya Palace Restaurant hosted by Richard which included me! It was his occasion but mine is a day earlier than his Oct. 11. This scene captures the mood of some of the 20+ people who danced to a Beatles number.
It was a real surprise for me in the sense that I did not plan with him for the event (especially for including me, in the cutting of cake). As proof, I actually went to the wrong restaurant (near Armada Hotel) much to my wife's embarrassment! If only he said LYL building, which was just behind my son's house (so near yet so far), I would have known immediately. When he mentioned Armada Hotel, my mind already made up that it was the new Tai Thong restaurant near it, rather than the one across Jalan Utara! Lesson learnt.
Richard invited his brothers and cousins as well as 3 of his ex-classmates which included me. 2 of us happen to be his occasional jamming 'kakis' and the third, now a Canadian citizen, happened to be my ex-classmate since kindergarten days! I felt honoured when he asked me to join him at the moment of cutting his birthday cake.
Among the 20+ persons (including spouses and his 2 nephews and a niece), there were 2 groups of musicians - one who used to play professionally while the other jam occasionally). So it was no surprise to see no shortage of singers and almost all of us sang along some of the more catchy songs. At our table alone, I could count 3 drummers and probably 10 who could play the guitar! Rainy (used to be bassist and vocalist) was good at singing and getting others to join him. His wife sang some Cantonese songs like a professional too. Richard's brother, Jeffrey who came from Singapore for the occasion, sang very well too.
The food was good (especially the roast pork and smoked duck!) and the service, excellent (every item portioned and dished out individually). The karaoke session towards the end was so successful that management had to switch off the system just before 12 midnight before we took the hint to leave!
Selected oldies included Black Magic Woman (sung by Richard), Bachelor Boy (he is one technically!), All Right Now, Soldier of fortune, Sha la la, Get Back, I saw her standing there, several of Lobo's which included Stoney; and Chinese songs which included Man Sui Ching San (Lisa Wang's most famous number), etc. etc.
By the way, TV Smith's post on Perfect Ten:
