A Closer look at Pakatan victories

PAS contested in a total of 72 parliamentary seats and won 21, a success rate of 29%;
PKR contested in 99 seats and won 30, a success rate of 30%; and
DAP contested in 51 seats and won 38, a success rate of 75%!
Overall, Pakatan as a coalition contested in 222 seats and won 89, a success rate of 40%.

As a comparison, Umno as a party, contested in 120 seats and won 88, a success rate of 73%.
It is worth mentioning Umno, on its own, needs to win 112 seats to command simple majority, short of 24.

Pakatan Rakyat won 3 states, with two-third majority each, namely Penang, Selangor and Kelantan.
Overall, each party seems to control one state each: DAP Penang, PKR Selangor, and PAS Kelantan.

Penang:

By the way, in Perak:

Pakatan Rakyat garnered 5,623,984 votes and won 89 seats:
- PKR 2,254,328 votes (40%); 30 seats (34%);
- DAP 1,736,267 votes (31%); 38 seats (43%);
- PAS 1,633,389 votes (29%); 21 seats (23%);

According to theSun (7 May), the BN won only 43 per cent of the popular vote in Perak at the state level compared to 54 per cent for Pakatan.

According to Nga Kor Ming: PR 625,710(54.9%); BN 508,747(44.49%); PR has 116,963 more votes, yet BN forms the state government.

Incidentally, Selangor with a population of 5.6 millions only has 22 parliamentary seats – whereas Perak, despite having a population of less than half of Selangor’s i.e. 2.4 millions, has 24!
