How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Water: necessity drives Singapore to world class technology...

thanks to Malaysia's continual threat to turn off the tap.

It is a lesson which encompasses many aspects of life: necessity for water to live on; generosity of provider of raw water, but with constant reminders that you owe your existence to it; you have become extremely successful despite lack of natural resources apart from human, but you still need water which is one of life's basic needs; you use your financial means to gather the best brains to concentrate on water technology, esp. on recycling and desalination, which nature provides some sources; and viola, you are confident enough to give notice that you will not renew the water agreement upon expiry in 2061!

The water spat between Pakatan-ruled Selangor and opposition BN seems so low tech - whether to source raw water from Pahang to Selangor, with warnings of imminent water insufficiency! Just imagine Selangor, a state larger in size than Singapore and largely forested in terms of water catchment area, will be facing water shortage soon! The frequent heavy rainfalls and resultant flash floods seem unable to provide for our raw water needs. We must be really spoilt by nature, so used to wasting water when cleaning our homes, cars and watering the plants. The wastage through leakages in the piping system of over 35% seems unacceptable. We have yet to educate our users on saving water and on recycling it. Even in a worst case scenario, world class water technology is just next door. Yet, we are overwhelmed by warnings in the BN-controlled msm that Selangor will be facing water shortage very very soon... if all the mega projects created by them are not followed through.
