I can still remember my late mother, who had a red Identity Card because of some technicalities (even though she was born in Malaysia), had to pass a basic level of Bahasa Malaysia to be eligible for a blue IC. More recently, we had a good laugh over complaints about some people who obtained 'datoship' without knowing proper Bahasa Malaysia, for example exclaiming, 'Gua sulah lapat latok!'
Seriously, if we are to visit some Chinese or Indian families who are fed daily on Astro's Cantonese or Tamil movies and other programs, ignoring all news broadcasts, we would be surprised at their lack of general knowledge like who is the Prime Minister or who is their Sultan.
But then again, if we think our citizens are not up to the mark in having some basic general knowledge, then we are in for some surprise at the answers from Americans:
