It was in the early 70's when I first heard about Professor Wang who made his name in University of Hong Kong as Professor and later Vice Chancellor. It was the time when NEP was in its early years and his name was quoted as one of those who was sidelined locally and migrated. In the light of the current debate on brain drain, he is just one of many good examples.
I have heard of many in government departments who had reached the 'glass ceiling' because their juniors were promoted to become heads of department. Many migrated for that reason.
What endears me was his surname Wang and his date of birth October 9, close enough but with twenty years difference! But also when Cheng was in University of Essex, she tried so hard to get Professor Wang to give a talk. He was more than willing, tried his best to accommodate her dates bearing in mind her examinations, but for some reason which I could not remember, it was not to be. His scheduled visit to UK was not suitable for her. I have just read he attended Anderson School in Ipoh, my son's alma mater.
I knew about the book launch, or at least should have known because my wife is on the mailing list of Perak Academy. So when I read about it, it was another of those 'I should have attended'!
