How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

The lowly sweet potato leaves

I was quite surprised to find sweet potato leaves stir-fried with garlic, among some expensive dishes like sweet and sour crabs, and so on.

I wish I could order more of the vegetable because it reminded me of its wonderful taste with plain boiled rice. It was during curfew time days after May 13, 1969 when a group of our relations came in a lorry to squat with us, bringing along their home grown sweet potato leaves. Maybe it was the uncertainty as to how long the curfew will last but I can still remember how I savour it. But at this pricey restaurant in Jalan Pinang, KL, it would be foolish of me to order something so plain at a high price. I could wait till when I am back in the rural areas.

While Paul and Helene (together with Alex, Clem and Denise) were hosting this dinner to thank us for the wonderful time they had with us, their Bed and Breakfast in Thorganby was being ransacked by burglars. I gathered that Helene lost quite a bit of heirloom stuff like jewellery, cut glasses and dinnerware. It turned out to be an expensive holiday this time round. We feel so sorry for them.
