A friend who does not use the internet nor owns a smart phone, bought a smart tv. He had seen his daughter using it for the first few days but he himself hasn't a clue, how to make proper use of it.
We had discussions on it during our breakfast sessions. Among us, we have a 'Know-all', a 'Know-better' and myself who 'knows a bit', but none of us has a smart tv. So it was all talk and no action until 'know-all' tried it at our friend's place but without success.
This morning, I decided to search the internet and I was not disappointed. There are all kinds of instructions from manufacturers, internet-savvy users, and even a definition of what is a smart tv in Wikipedia!
As someone who does not own a smart tv, I can only show some links which I think will be useful to those who own one and have yet to take the first step to learn about it. Most of us shy away from the internet because of a mental block. We are probably only a few steps away, if not because of our reluctance to take the first step.
'A smart TV device is either a television set with integrated Internet capabilities or a set-top box for television (Unifi comes to mind) that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a contemporary basic television set...'
"Smart TV"s:
Deliver content from other computers or network attached storage devices on a network like photos, movies and music using either a Digital Living Network Alliance / Universal Plug and Play media server or similar service program like Windows Media Player or Network-attached storage (NAS), or via iTunes.
Provide access to Internet-based services including traditional broadcast TV channels, catch-up services, video-on-demand, Electronic program guide, interactive advertising, personalisation, voting, games, social networking, and other multimedia applications.'
