How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Looking but not seeing...hearing but not listening...

Last Saturday morning, my brothers and sisters-in-law, together with my son and daughter and a niece, were waiting in the house for another brother and his wife, before we go together for our annual Cheng Beng visit to clear the weeds and pray at our ancestors' graves. My daughter was seated next to my son. After 5 minutes of chat, a brother looked at my daughter and suddenly exclaimed, 'You're back!' He looked but did not notice that my daughter and not my daughter-in-law was sitting next to my son!

At a wedding dinner recently, I told my good friend (host, who is bride's father) that because I had been busy being a new grandfather (we actually travelled on the same day to KL for the dinner and it was our first visit since the baby's arrival), I could not attend their earlier event. Last Saturday evening, I called him when in son's house and he overheard baby cries and asked about it. I said, 'I told you at the dinner!' and he replied that whatever people said to him at the dinner did not really register!

Thinking about it, both cases involved seniors... quite understandable, but more amusing I think.

Sign of aging, hearing going off? We can detect loss of sight but how to detect loss of hearing, especially if it only occurs at noisy places. If we cannot hear well, how can we listen?
