How should we judge a government?

In Malaysia, if you don't watch television or read newspapers, you are uninformed; but if you do, you are misinformed!

"If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing." - Malcolm X

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience - Mark Twain

Why we should be against censorship in a court of law: Publicity is the very soul of justice … it keeps the judge himself, while trying, under trial. - Jeremy Bentham

"Our government is like a baby's alimentary canal, with a happy appetite at one end and no
responsibility at the other. " - Ronald Reagan

Datukship... Anyone?

A simple man who is worthy of a title would refuse it for various reasons. I have come across them as 'No, I don't like being addressed as 'Dato or Tan Sri'', 'No, I don't think I like the idea of having to attend those royal functions with protocols and dress code', 'No, every time the Sultan goes on a visit or return from one, I need to be at the airport, 'No, I have heard of 'angpows' for certain occasions being returned for being 'too little', and so on.

I have come across retired senior civil servants who would go to a First Class ward in a private hospital (though entitled to free government hospital treatment) simply because of his stature or what he deemed to be so. The fact that he could afford it makes us wonder.

Cheeky comments (from sour grapes?) : DPMP stands for Dulu Pandai Main Perempuan; SPMP stands for Sekarang Pandai Main Perempuan; JP stands for Jaga Pintu; PJK stands for Pandai Jaga Kereta; and so on. Anyway, Kee Thuan Chye has this to say:

"I hope those Pakatan Rakyat leaders still without titles remain so but if they become more entrenched in government who knows what might get into their heads? But I for one simply can't conceive of a Datuk Nurul Izzah or a Datuk Seri Lim Guan Eng. Most unpalatable of all would possibly to be confronted — when and if he ever retires — with a Tun Lim Kit Siang!

He is a people’s icon. If he crosses over, it would be a monumental loss."
