Apparently, the dowry depends on the status of the prospective groom eg. a doctor is higher than say, a clerk. So, for the prospective bride, a rich father helps in a way by being able to afford higher dowry expected by the parents of a professional man. But the system causes misery to those parents who are poor with a daughter, or more which would add to their miseries.
