BN-controlled mainstream media: mainly tv channels and newspapers, have been used to maximise damage to Pakatan and its leaders' reputation. They have the advantage of control of the media, and being the incumbent government, can choose to be selective in prosecution and harassment of the opposition while ignoring BN's wrongdoings. Any whistleblower is almost certain to be harassed too.
Rafizi's expose on NFC put him vulnerable under charges of offence under BAFIA. This is a clear-cut case of putting fear in whistle-blowers for disclosing banking information. Yet, the more serious offences under BAFIA rules for selling NPLs were not only ignored by Bank Negara, but given blanket approval by the Finance Minister!
Suaram's initiative to implicate our government's role in the Scorpene submarine deal, had seen the unusual action from the Companies Commission, supposedly to find out if there were any offence for an NGO registered as a company. It did not matter that the Registrar of Societies would have made it almost impossible to register one. But the raid (with a warrant not signed!) was almost comical. But most people would have guessed that the real motive was to find anything incriminating on the Scorpene affairs. I wonder why such actions are not considered an abuse of power by the power-that-be, when Anwar was convicted for something less serious before.
Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng, had his fair share of harassment, by local Umno leaders and their henchmen. His teenage son was not spared, and now his wife, a Malacca state assemblywoman.
Anwar Ibrahim and Lim Guan Eng seem to be competing for the title of 'Most harassed' politician, at the rate the relentless publicity stunts were thrown at them.
But most people believe BN's abuse of the msm and the use of lies about Pakatan leaders' private lives are likely to backfire and make them stronger and more popular instead. People are getting tired of BN leaders' antics which really show their shallowness as politicians.
