The word that inspired Namewee...

'Kuku' in Bahasa Malaysia means 'fingernail', so was it so objectionable as to cause uproar and protests which made an unknown rapper by the name of Namewee a household name? Incidentally, surname Wee is funny to the English because to them it means 'piss', but we cannot please everyone, can we?

To the Chinese speaking Chinese, 'kuku' or more specifically 'kuku chiau' in a 'mother to child talk' refers to the little birdie, as exposed in this picture (apology to the kid, but thanks to the owner of the picture).

So, as it happened, one thing led to another and Namewee became not only a household name but icon to one group and object of hate to another.

When we analyse the many cases of authors and cartoonists who got into trouble with the authorities, one thing stood out - they became more famous as a result! They should thank the narrow-minded Home Minister and his sidekicks for their relentless support!

  1. Yes, and "kuku" also sounds like cuckoo which carries two meaning: one; a little bird and two; means silly, and, an unsound mind!

So, which word will offend you?
