We used to tell this story of how male dogs need to lift up one hind leg to pee. To repeat, many many years ago, a male dog was knocked down by a collapsing wall. So, by evolution, his descendants got this habit of raising a hind leg for just in case the tree or fire hydrant or whatever suits them for peeing, falls on them.
Well informed opinions suggest the reason for peeing all over the place is to mark their territories. Other dogs will smell and they seem to know if the pee came from a fierce dog. Every time my wife's car arrived home, the two dogs will smell the wheels. The way they did that, I wonder how much information they get out of the smell, as they go round the four wheels.
Looking at the following cartoon, this dog's pecker got pecked by an angry woodpecker!
