Near our house, there are two house owners who rear chickens, especially 'yim kai' or castrated chickens which can fetch Rm40 a kg. ie. Rm200 for one weighing 5 kg.! Some people said they would rather eat something else, but the demand exceeds supply which accounted for the increasing price. No, we don't rear them at home, yes, we have to put up with the crowing at all hours. Friends calling me at home, used to comment why your cocks crow at this hour? I told them, they have been castrated and I think that affected them mentally too. I used to joke that fortunately we are not those who would like to claim to live in classy areas... just imagine you give people the impression and then the crowing starts... and the ambience sounds like animal farm and rural rather than say, 'gated community'?
