Air Mail can be faster than ordinary local mail...

About a week ago, when seeing off Cheng at KLIA, she was looking for a post office. I told her I need to post something too, which I had to get it from the car. It was common sense to think that sending something from the airport to somewhere overseas should be faster than if posted say, outside KL, for instance. Sure enough, what was posted on Tuesday morning in KLIA arrived in Aberdeen, Scotland, on Friday! I am sure some local mail took a longer time to reach for a number of reasons.

I was particularly happy because I did not register the special padded envelope even though the item was light (postage only Rm2, same cost as the envelope!) but costed Rm135.

Based on my common sense, delays in local mail could be due to one of the following reasons:

1. Most serious where it happened before, when the postman actually did not deliver for days on end, and it was discovered somewhere in an obsure location much later. In this case, it was not just delay but non-delivery.

2. Where the postman or someone else intercepted the letters which has cheques or even cash enclosed, again not merely delay, but non-delivery.

3. Where the postman (or could it be company policy to save costs?) only delivers after accumulating letters for two or more days. I have this suspicion when there was a number of letters being delivered together. Sometimes, we are resigned to accepting a 'better late than never' situation.

Fortunately, my personal experience with Pos Malaysia has been really good, apart from the occasional letters being left at the gate which could have been taken by anybody.

My good impression of Pos Malaysia has been re-inforced with my bad impression of some courier services. If someone asked me first, I would tell them to send by regular post (preferably not registered nor by PosLaju) because I do not have to be home, waiting for them. With courier services, I always have this problem of someone calling, 'where is...' and I have to be home waiting for it to be delivered. They are very convenient to the senders (by coming to the office) but definitely not to the sendees.
