Why would a student break an empty glass bottle on a public road?

It had happened before: the sound of broken glass as a bottle hit against the tarred road in front of our house. It was the same reaction when I got out of the house to check: a handful of students hanging around in front of our house under the shade of palm trees giving me the blank look. When I said I just heard it and they pointed to a direction and said the person just walked away! Either they were bluffing or they considered the act as something 'biasa' or normal. I wonder what went through the mind of a student who did that. Just for the thrill of a one-off sound of broken glass? The danger of those sharp-ended pieces could endanger anyone who walks along the road, especially at night. It never occurred to him that it was wrong to cause such danger to others? I have been picking up rubbish after them: food wrappers, discarded cigarette and match boxes, plastic bottles and so on. There is even a graffiti on our wall. What happened to all the Moral Studies taught in school? The school near us happens to be SMK Sultan Yussuf, Alma Mater of our Sultan, named after his father. But there is only this much I can complain about, anything more, we are like sitting ducks at the mercy of the students.

I found your blog while trying to discover why young idiots smash bottles around Amsterdam where I live. Its constant for about 3 years now and getting worse. I even saw one fool smash a bottle in a childs playground while he was there with his own child! Its not just litter, it endangers particularly children. I can only assume they think its cool to do it because they know they shouldn´t and that makes them rebelious, or pathetic depending on your viewpoint. Good luck with your idiots, its way worse here.

  2. Malcolm, thank you for your comment. We will never be able to understand certain actions of people.

In our country, it is a pity we do not have proper bins for recyclable glass. Even when disposing broken pieces, I worry over them, in case scavengers get hurt while looking for things.
