Don't expect discount from a bank

Ambank Batu Gajah is the only bank (out of five) which has safe-deposit box facility. In other words, it has monopoly over this little extra service required by bank customers who need to keep some valuables or important documents.

My initial discomfort was the notice (dated June 7) requesting payment of Rm75 annual rental within 14 days (ie. by June 21), which appears reasonable. But the date of expiry is July 12 which means payment has to be made by almost one month earlier! My next unpleasant surprise was when I was told to pay Rm95 instead. When asked, the lady in charge replied something to the effect that the numbering was not in sequence which resulted in the different amount stated (???), that the prefix 'A' is for that amount, and that I should refer to my previous year's receipt. I remembered the amount was higher than Rm75 so I said, 'I thought it was a reduction' and she quickly replied, 'Don't expect discount'. So naive was me then, to expect discount from banks these days.

But I am not satisfied with the explanation and the discrepancy between the official notice amount and the official receipt. Surely with today's technology, the explanation about the numbering not in sequence, etc. cannot adequately explain the difference which left a customer in doubt about the system. Maybe, it was simply 'not in the system' which again is not good enough for a bank.

  1. You can address your complaint to the bank's complaint bureau or to the Central Bank(Bank Negara). Nowadays bank service is like a governemnt department of the past(30 years agao?) Of course you have no choice or else you could change bank.
    Hope this link will help:

  2. Thanks CLY for your comment and advice. It is a small matter and it would not have mattered if the notice stated Rm95 instead of Rm75. After all, with limited supply of safe-deposit boxes, they can adopt a 'take it or leave it' stance.

  3. Mr KS, its a matter of pricinple. Not so long ago, I closed my savings account at Maybank. A few months later, they wrote to me to claim for 15 sen, saying that there was a miscalculation. The postage itself plus the stationery was certainly worth more than that(plus a few reminders). I did not pay and it was recorded in the bank computer that I was a deliquent customer. I found that out when I went to open a FD account. So for banks, it is a matter of interests on principal. I was more interested in the principle.
