Security is not what it seems...

false sense of security is more like it.

Just imagine you rent a parking space and pay your share for security service because you rented an office lot in a commercial area with individual shop offices. It so happens your co-tenants are involved in businesses like restaurants, pubs and massage centres which attract many customers, especially at night. Car jockeys come into play and most times they are thick-skinned enough to use those parking lots rented by others as well because they know certain lots are used only during office hours during the day. When demand exceeds supply even during the day, they are likely to use any unoccupied lots even though they know those are reserved lots.

Some tenants are able to compromise and they actually do not mind their lots being used at times when they do not use them. But there are times when you need to use your own parking lot and there is already someone's vehicle parked there. How would you feel? Each time, you would need to find out whose vehicle is it and a car jockey will then take it away before you can park your car. In other words, even though you pay for a parking lot, there is no exclusive right to it. Complain to the management? Even before that, by telling the person off, your car is likely to be vandalized and your complaint will leave you none the better or safer. Such rackets usually involve dubious characters, similar to 'jaga kereta' menace.

Many people take security in a condominium or commercial centre for granted, with the mistaken notion of knowing your rights and expecting your rights will be respected by others. The real world works on supply and demand. Where there is excessive demand, in this case, for parking space, then might is right and it is better that you come to terms with that.
