Imagine the surprise of my neighbours (for the last 15 years) when they saw me playing drums for the first time, in their relative's restaurant in Batu Gajah! None of them knew I had been playing drums as a hobby, using music CDs or jamming with guitarists.
I promised one of the partners of the restaurant to play for their opening on September 5, but I went to KL instead. Last night was his wife's birthday and he suggested the particular day. So it was my way of keeping my earlier promise that I took the trouble to dismantle, pack into the Navara, drive the short distance, unpack and re-assemble the drums kit.
It was just past 4.00 pm when I was ready to test the sound system, which was basically a home hi-fi with the speakers fixed on the ceiling in the shop. The customers were mainly outside the shop with a view of any video being played on a big screen. I was lucky to have brought along my own CDs because the 2 CDs which they bought at the last moment were Chinese ballads which I was not familiar with. There was a guy who likes to sing and could play the harmonica but playing sentimental songs with it did not go too well with the drums as anyone can imagine.
I played my favourites: Smoke on the Water, Sweet Child of Mine, All Right Now, Let it Rain, Sebastasse Una Canzone, some Bee Gees' like Massachusetts and Island in the Stream, and others. I played a few of Beyond's like Hoi Fut Tin Hong (lucky to have brought one of their CDs) a few times because it was his favourite.
It was only a one-table birthday celebration among family members so it was easy to please. The fact that there were other customers, I could not help worrying about the loud sound disturbing some of them. In fact, some of them might want to watch the Astro instead! As there were a few Indian customers, I played Biddu's Passage to India twice. But the most important was when the birthday song was sung by birthday girl's husband (using a compilation version), which made my effort worthwhile.
