Weaning from the internet

Most people using the internet have been accused of being addicted to it. Compared to those who played games on Facebook, and more serious games with amplified sound effects, I am quite normal. In fact, I used the internet often, but for a short time only, to check emails, read updated favourite blogs, and update my own, if and when I had something to add. I do check stock prices, usually the Staronline which is at least 10 minutes behind. Only if it interests me that I would go into M2U to check prices in realtime and maybe, place orders to buy or sell.

The reason I waited for the modem/router was because TMnet's outsourced contractor actually advised me to get a better one, instead of the one he supplied! Then, because of the good service by this computer shop manager (he checked my settings a few times before without charging me), I just could not buy from someone else and expect him to provide such good service.

Anyway, just as I was about to call him, he called to say the modem/router has arrived, after much chasing on his part. It is understandable because suppliers have their schedules and any 'one off' is just not worth it, other than to maintain goodwill.

It took him more than an hour, yet could not get the connection right. I always feel in such a situation that it was my rotten luck more than anything else. Anyway, went across to have a late lunch. For drinks, I asked for red bean soup but instead was offered 'ais kacang' with lots of red beans. While waiting for the fried rice, I felt so full that I had to have it packed for later!

Anyway, went over to the shop again, but saw the manager outside and he gave a negative sign to say that it was still unconnected. I asked if it could be due to 'hang session' - my main problem before when using Streamyx using cable. It was a long shot and I wasn't sure if it has any connection with the problem. He said, 'maybe' and I asked if I could use his fixed line phone. Called 1300 88 9515 and had problems with the lady over my name and my user name. Anyway, it was spot on that I was right - there was a 'hang session'!

By the way, without my own connection, I used the internet cafe to check emails and stock prices, but was wary to use online banking or downloading stuff sent by friends... just in case I had problem deleting them from the computer! To my wife, having to use the internet cafe is already a sign of addiction... sigh.
