Why I cannot give a definite answer...

when someone invites me to a certain function...

The recent wedding lunch at the KL Tower was planned well beforehand and I was well informed about it. Initially, because of a phobia of heights, I thought it would be easier just attending the pre-wedding buffet at the home of the bride's parents, which is within walking distance from our house. Then I thought it was an excellent trip because a comfortable coach will take us to and from KL Tower - no worries over finding the place, parking space and so on. So I asked the hosts about it and the father said, 'I thought you were from KL so you would not be interested because you would have been there...' He actually had to contact his daughter to send an invitation from KL to BG.

Later, I was informed about my family's Ching Ming visit planned over the same weekend, Selangor Ongs' Clansmen Association's special prayers by monks for the ancestors, and my nephew's first grandchild's full moon, ... and I decided to stay for the whole week!

So instead of both of us going on a day trip to KL Tower, my wife went alone with the rest of her old friends and hosts, and I was to meet them at the venue which was appropriately dubbed, Wedding made in Heaven or something to that effect (cannot trust my memory).

I always say, 'in KL, you are either too early or too late because of the unpredictability of the traffic situation'. Well, I got a lift from a nephew and I was an hour too early! Having forgotten my mobile phone early in the morning and forgotten my changed clothes when I got off the vehicle, I was quite blur. It was my first visit and I was glad my nephew did not leave me at the main road! It was quite a long drive uphill to the entrance!

Getting in, guests of the wedding were given stickers and shown a separate lift to the tower. I was Numero Uno! While waiting, a young man who I later guessed must be the person in charge, asked, 'Do you drive?' with both hands gesturing the driving action. What crossed my mind was 'is he asking because he is going to offer me alcoholic drinks?' Yet my dumb answer was based on my mistaken notion that he thought I was a driver and I replied, 'I am a guest'! Then he said, 'I thought if you came by car, then you can have the parking ticket endorsed'!

The resident band consisted of a lady singer, keyboardist, bassist and a conga drummer. The last person later became my centre of attention... simply because I was trying to figure out how to play it by merely observing. It was only after the event that I thought about 'what if I was given a chance to play an instrument, which instrument would I choose and which song or instrumental number?' For just one number, I would choose to play bass to Black Magic Woman... but then again, the next question is its appropriateness given the occasion!

KL Tower as a venue for a wedding reception is definitely different from the usual restaurants no matter how posh the place. One feels on top of the world and the view of KL was very different from that at ground level. Even the Twin Towers seem shorter by comparison. Later at the Observation Tower level, I could see two schools which I presumed to be St. John's Institution and Bukit Nanas Convent. My wife took a view through a powerful binoculars and said she could see the interior of people's apartments too!

The lunch was stated to start at 1.30pm but actually started past 2 pm because we came out of the restaurant past 4 pm. It was almost 5.30pm when we left. Before that, we went to the coach to speak to the driver cum shareholder to ask if we could get a lift to the nearest LRT station. Then when he got a call from the host, he could not drive the coach round the corner to the entrance because of indiscriminate parking on both sides of the road! There were guards on duty yet they allowed that to happen. Even when one car drove off, it was a very tight squeeze through even for an experienced Manjit to handle.

For some basic information on KL Tower:

What happened after the opening of the Atlantis?

Atlantis Hotel was opened on the palm Island in Dubai. Until now, the world is talking about its opening ceremony. The opening cost was more than $1 & a Half Million

But unfortunately recently, It burnt down

What goes?

A beautiful woman loved growing tomatoes, but couldn't seem to get her tomatoes to turn red.

One day, while taking a stroll, she came upon a gentleman neighbor who had the most beautiful garden full of huge red tomatoes.

The woman asked the gentlemen, "What do you do to get your tomatoes so red?"

The gentlemen responded, "Well, twice a day I stand in front of my tomato garden naked in my trench coat and flash them. My tomatoes turn red from blushing so much."

Well, the woman was so impressed; she decided to try doing the same thing to her tomato garden to see if it would work. So twice a day for two weeks she flashed her garden hoping for the best.

One day the gentleman was passing by and asked the woman, "By the way, how did you make out? Did your tomatoes turn red?"

"No", she replied, "but my cucumbers are enormous..."

The two-letter word 'UP'...

This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other two-letter word. It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v].

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car.

At other times this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP.

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP !

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary.. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for awhile, things dry UP. One could go on & on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now ........my time is UP !

Oh....one more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning & the last thing you do at
night? UP!

Don't screw UP. Send this on to everyone you look UP in your address book..

Now I'll shut UP.

Husband's dilemma solved...

Four blokes spend weeks planning the perfect camping and fishing trip to a remote and disconnected spot.

Two days before they are due to leave, Dave's wife puts her foot down and tells him he's not going.

His mates are naturally pissed off that he can't go, but what can they do, they decide to push on.

Two days later the three fellas arrive at the remote camp site to find Dave sitting there with a tent set up, firewood gathered, beer open and fish cooking on the fire.

Steve: 'Damn man, how long you been here and how did you talk your wife into letting you go?'

Dave: 'I've been here since last night. Yesterday afternoon I was sitting in my chair and my wife came up behind me and put her hands over my eyes and said 'guess who?'

I pulled her hands off and she was wearing a brand new see-through nightie.
She took my hand and took me to our bedroom. The room had two dozen candles and rose petals all over.

On the bed were handcuffs and ropes! She told me to tie and cuff her to the bed, so I did.'

'And then she said:' 'Do whatever you want.'

So here I am...

Mother of all controversial Brand Names...

Move over, names like Fuch, FCUK, and other pretenders. Here comes the mother of all controversial brand name:

German Firm Wins Right to Make Beer Called 'Fucking Hell'

The village that inspired the name: Fucking, Austria

The EU's trademarks authority has permitted a German firm to brew beer and produce clothing under the name "Fucking Hell". It may be an expletive in English, but in German it could refer to a light ale -- Hell -- from the Austrian town of Fucking. Whether it will be brewed there is another question.

The European Union trademarks authority has permitted a German firm to register the brand name "Fucking Hell" for a new beer, much to the irritation of the Austrian village of Fucking.

In English, the term "Fucking Hell" is just an expletive used to express irritation or surprise. In German, it could refer to a light ale from Fucking in Upper Austria, because "Hell" is a term for light ale in southern Germany and Austria.
The problem is that Fucking has no brewery, and the town's mayor, Franz Meindl, is not aware of any plans to build one there, Austrian public broadcaster ORF reported on its Web site.

The Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union said in a statement that it had rejected a complaint that the trade mark "Fucking Hell" was upsetting, accusatory and derogatory.

"The word combination claimed contains no semantic indication that could refer to a certain person or group of persons. Nor does it incite a particular act. It cannot even be understood as an instruction that the reader should go to hell," the Office said in its statement.

EU Trademark Office Has No Problem with Name

"Fucking Hell" was an "an interjection used to express a deprecation, but it does not indicate against whom the deprecation is directed," the Office added. "Nor can it be considered as reprehensible to use existing place names in a targeted manner (as a reference to the place), merely because this may have an ambiguous meaning in other languages."

That is good news for German marketing executives Stefan Fellenberg and Florian Krause, who own the rights to the brand name, and who had referred to the town of Fucking in their application to register it.

Tittelconsulting, a marketing agency, said in a statement on Monday that the owners will use the trademark to manufacture a variety of products including clothing and beer. "It includes the marketing of a beer among other things," Tittelconsulting said in a statement.

The new brew was likely to be presented in August or September, it added. Contacted by SPIEGEL ONLINE, Fellenberg declined to give further comment, so it's unclear where the beer will be brewed.

It is likely to heighten Fucking's fame, which is something Meindl, the town's mayor, isn't happy about, given the trouble the name has caused it over the years. "Twelve or 13 town signs have been stolen. We've taken to fixing them with concrete, welding and rivets."

The Bavarian towns of Kissing and Petting have the same problem, as does the eastern German town of Pissing. But so far, there are no plans to name a beer after them.

On Day Traders: Wee Ken Fatt...

So Ken Wee!

Cheng started her email with the following link on Day Traders:

and I found the following relevant

If the motto of the original day-trade boom was, “If the pros can do it, so can we,” the motto today is, “We can’t do much worse than the pros.”

“There’s this idea out there that retail investors are dumb,” says Howard Lindzon, the co-founder of StockTwits, which curates a gusher of stock tips and financial news alerts tweeted by 20,000 regular contributors. “Well, it turns out that the institutional investors are pretty dumb. They nearly blew us all up with leverage.”

Just to give it an idea why my daughter thought of me when she came across the report. I opted to be a day trader when I chose to be a house husband. I started as small time investor and traded in some shares but ended up being 'enforced long term investor' holding mainly worthless shares. Being conservative, despite having gone through 3 market crashes, I am still alive and kicking but with a broken nest egg. Otherwise I could have been a multi-millionaire (if aggressively taking risks) and probably a bankrupt. I am not sure which would have been better. Like in love, some would say it is better to have been loved and lost it than not at all. It is all up to the individual.

Firsthand experience at Batu Gajah General Hospital

I have always wanted to try out as an outpatient at the Batu Gajah General Hospital but for various reasons did not, until this morning.

My right knee problem due to a fall six months ago did not go away but I got lots of advice to see acupuncturist, chiropractor, orthopedic specialist and so on during the period. My recent meetings with close relatives and their further insistence as well as reminders from my daughter who used to work as a part-time carer in UK, prompted me to go to Hospital Besar Batu Gajah.

Being new, I did not even know where to start. At the Outpatient, met someone I knew who asked what I was there for and he told me to go to the first counter on the left to register. Left my Identity Card on a small tray and someone took it to look for record and I mentioned that it was my first visit. I was asked if Retiree and whether I have a special card meant for Pensioners (ex-government servant) and I replied no card and was told to pay Rm1 (otherwise free)!

This Rm1 started my mind wondering... so cheap no wonder there are so many people, and no wonder the government is hard pressed for providing good facilities. Then I was reminded of an ex civil servant friend who commented about people in Mercs going for treatment at government hospitals giving the impression that they should go for private treatment and leave GH to government servants and the poor. My wife would contend that for paying high taxes, high income people are also entitled, if not more, to government facilities. From a practical point, it is also a question of whether one is prepared to wait for service, AND be prepared for some 'loss of face' when those who think you do not belong and should be paying a premium at the private hospitals. There are also those employees at the GH who know who they are and tried their best to show their authority now that they were given the chance.

When told to go to Room 3, I could see only Room A, B and C, not knowing further to the right, there are indeed, Doctor Room 1, 2, 3 & 4! My number was 148 and I waited among a crowd - just those who are seated numbered 60 and easily another 20 more 'hanging around' both inside and outside. Slowly, I get to hear comments like: 'The one being treated is only 38' and the time was 10.20 am. Someone I know came and he said his number is 57 and he had went out and came back. Another person I know complained that his number is 88 yet someone with a number 100 was attended to earlier. It seems they refused to use the 'Queue system' which was already in place earlier.

I must say, under the circumstances, the staff worked admirably. For example, a nurse who did the calling of names actually reassured someone who asked if she was missed, 'Kami tidak tinggalkan satu orang pun' (or we do not leave out even one person) and the time was past 1 pm. My turn came at 1.30pm (waited 3 hours) and I was attended to by a young and pretty Indian doctor. I asked the obvious question, 'No time for lunch yet?' and she replied, 'I did not even have my breakfast... I was on 24 hours duty earlier...' If there were any complaints about service, they pale in comparison to what they had to put up with. I honestly sympathize with their working conditions and admire their work ethics. I said something like, 'Nothing much can be done?' without expecting a reply.

I was instructed to go for an X-ray which can only be done at 2pm. I went back for porridge as I too did not even have my breakfast. With the X-ray film, I went back to face the afternoon crowd which included a few familiar faces of the morning visit. Was given prescription and a form to take to Physiotherapy section for appointment. It was already past 4 pm and I had yet to collect the medicine from Pharmacy, so I opted for a quick 20 minutes of hot treatment and agreed to come for the next visit on Thursday morning.

As the Astro advertisement puts it in Cantonese: 'Ngoh yau keh hai si karn' (or What I have is time) being a retiree, so what is waiting a few hours for almost free treatment? But I can imagine some people might think I should not add to the crowd... but they did not know my situation as 'Mah sei lok tei harng' (or when the horse you are riding died, you have to come down and walk).
Moreover I needed the experience to be able to write about our beloved GH - it used to be the only one in Perak which had First Class Ward where the royalties had to go to for treatment.

Heal yourself - Part 13 (with the people around you)

Continuing with our 15-day self-healing article series, today we venture into the realm of what I call social healing. I wouldn't have believe this even two years ago, but I have since come to realize that WHO you are living with is just as important (or perhaps more important) than WHERE you are living.

Living among healthy-minded, high-energy individuals who remain engaged in the pursuits of health and happiness has an extremely powerful rubbing off effect on you. These people can lift your spirits, inspire you to embrace positive changes and serve as shining examples of the health results you wish to achieve.

That all sounds fine, you might say, but what about the people around you who aren't on board with your desire to live a more healthful life? This is the challenging part: What do you do about family and friends who consistently pursue a comparatively unhealthy lifestyle... and who tend to drag you down along with them?

That's the tough part, and the closer the people are to you, the more difficult it can be. The classic situation I see from talking to readers is a middle-aged woman who is genuinely attempting to pursue a more healthful lifestyle but whose husband is a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy who wants nothing at all to do with salads, superfoods or nutrition.

So what do you do in these cases? Here's a simple, three-step approach that you may find valuable:

Three steps to uplifting the health of those around you

Step 1) Keep your goals private (at first). Even though you may have a goal of losing a certain number of pounds, or overcoming a specific disease, or improving your health in some noticeable way, don't necessarily announce that to the people around you. Why? Because if they're not aligned with your health goals, they will immediately dismiss the idea or even attack you for daring to pursue such a thing. By keeping your goals private (at first), you'll be able to keep them present in your own consciousness while you experiment with new choices in food and lifestyle habits to find out what's working for you -- without the pressure of everybody watching over your shoulder to second guess what you're doing.

Step 2) Pursue your health changes with an attitude of enjoyment. Simply start making the dietary changes you have decided are good for you -- and the exercise changes you might need -- and when you're asked by anyone why you're making these changes, just answer, "Because I enjoy doing this." Or you can say, "I like this!" You don't have to explain more. Simply enjoying it is reason enough.

Step 3) Be the example that others admire. As you pursue these new health habits for yourself, changes will begin to occur over time. You may notice improved skin, a reduction of excess body fat, enhanced energy or stamina, improved mood, a reduction in the symptoms of degenerative disease and so on. As this happens, the people around you will take notice. That's the point where they will begin to get curious about what you're doing that's working so well. And at some point they will ask you questions like, "Hey, you're looking younger and more energetic these days. What's your secret?"

Everybody loves to hear a secret. Especially if it's a secret that makes them look better or feel better. So you can say something like, "Do you really want to know the secret? Because it's so simple, and so easy, and anybody can do it, and it's really working. But are you sure you want to know it?"

At that point, no one can resist the temptation to learn the secret. So they'll lean in and say, "Yes! I want to know the secret!" That's when you whisper in their ear, "Juicing" or "daily walking for one hour" or whatever your secret has been.

At this point, they will tend to greatly value the information you're sharing with them. You see, if you came out and simply told them all this without waiting for them to ask first, they might have discounted the information. But because they noticed something in you that they wanted to experience for themselves, and because they asked you, they will now value the information so much more. So the secret here is to refrain from pushing information onto others. Let them come to you and ask, and then be ready to give them good information about what's working for you so that they can try it out for themselves.

The positive ripple effect

In time, as this phenomenon unfolds in your life, impacting your circle of family and friends, you will actually begin to see a ripple effect of positive health changes in the people around you. This, in turn, will translate into mutual support for your healthy lifestyle choices, and you may even find some people who you thought could never be interested in health suddenly turning around and becoming interested.

You may also find that those who might have criticized you at first (if you had shared your plans with them up front) will suddenly come to you when they are in need of a health solution. They may return from the doctor's office one day with a diagnosis of diabetes, for example, or a lump in their breast. And all of a sudden they're really interested in solving their health problem by searching for new answers. So they may turn to you with renewed interest and start asking questions about health and nutrition that never interested them before. That's when it's your time to shine as an example of a healthy, happy person living a healthful lifestyle.

You don't have to preach to others, of course, or condemn their current choices in unhealthful foods. Nobody likes to be called an idiot for eating hot dogs and drinking pasteurized cow's milk. But you can simply invite them to explore the possibility that they may experience improved results by making improved choices. And you can guide them in some directions for exploration as rapidly as they are interested in making those shifts.

This is how you can work over time to uplift the health of those around you (and thereby create a more supportive community of family and friends that will embrace your own health habits, too).

Thinking of moving?

There's another way to uplift your supporting community of family and friends: Move to a city that's more into health.

I'm from the Kansas City area, which is more famous for Barbeque than health, and when I visit Kansas City , it's always difficult to find places to buy fresh juice or organic vegetables. I was in North Carolina a year ago and noticed much the same thing there, too. I hear Cleveland isn't exactly a health hub of the country either.

But other cities like Miami , New York , Seattle , Portland , Los Angeles , Houston , San Diego , Toronto and Sante Fe are great places to find lots of health-conscious people who are totally into the same things you're into! If you feel out of place where you currently live, and you want to surround yourself with more health-conscious people, the general advice is to head to either the East or West coast and you'll find more health-conscious communities there.

Moving to a different city may sound a little drastic, but if you've run out of options in the place where you live, and you feel like you would benefit from the support of a community that's more aligned with your goals, then moving can be one of the best decisions of your life!

I've found that surrounding yourself with health-conscious people who are aligned with your own lifestyle priorities is one of the most important things you can do to keep yourself on that path, too.

So consider this option. Keep your mind open to this possibility, and check out all the options that can help surround you with a supportive, aligned community of people who demonstrate the kind of health-oriented lifestyle you aspire to make your own. Once you surround yourself with those people, before long you'll find yourself becoming one of them and getting the results they're getting, too! Healthy begins to rub off on you rather quickly once you're in the company of healthy, supportive people.

Social healing works. And you can make a conscious decision to either uplift those around you, or move to a different location where you can find more like-minded people who will support your lifestyle choices. Either way, you come out healthier and happier. Enjoy!

Great Grand Uncle I am...

I am not yet a grandfather, not even a father-in-law, but the law of nature is such that my oldest nephew who is only 5 years younger is already a grandfather. Whether I like it or not, I am someone's great grand uncle when I am shy of 60! This is nothing compared with a sister who became a grandmother at 39 mainly because she got married even before her 16th birthday.

As they say, time waits for no man, so while myself was late (comparatively) in getting married, and my children chose careers over marriage (or so it seems) but I can safely say that because no one with the right chemistry, common objective and preferably no long distance arrangement came along, my other relatives continue their fast pace through life.

At my age, my friends who are around 60 years old comprise great grandfathers, grandfathers and wannabees. Yes, there are those who wish but there are things beyond their control, which is a fact of life. My mother-in-law, at 91 is still waiting for a great grandson to continue with the family surname and she had 'ten hou kiew' (in Hakka) or 'tan chin koo' (in Hokien). The Hokien version brings back memories of how my brother who used to joke about a OCBC Chairman, Tan Chin Tuan. Because he was Chairman for so long, they used to joke that his brother, Tan Chin Koo (fictitious) is getting impatient!

I know my children will be reading this and have a good laugh, but they should take it as me dropping a heavy hint...

Why I wear my glasses...

Recently, I recognized a former classmate at a PKR open house in BU3, but sad to say, the brief exchange of news led to my knowing about her sister's passing.

Yesterday, during a wedding lunch at the KL Tower, on my way to the restroom, I saw this man with his daughter. Just by looking at him, I said, 'Lip Shien's brother?' and he said he could not recognize me but then remembered later that we met in a bus before. He even asked me, 'Still in BG?' Then he explained that his mother-in-law is a sister of the bride's father! What a small world we live in. He is my best man's brother.

All these chance meetings were made possible because I always wear my glasses in public and could recognize friends when I see them. My wife, on the other hand, wears only her sunglasses when driving. Only recently, she actually had 3 pairs fitted - one for short-sightedness, one for reading and even one multi-focal which she finds uncomfortable. Before I knew about her myopia, I did not know why each time I pointed to her someone and asked whether she knew him or her and most times she would reply in the negative. See the difference?

But then again, because of poor memory, some faces recognized could not be tagged with the right names.

Yesterday was a day to prove my forgetfulness. At 6.45 am a brother came to fetch me. He has poor night vision and being dark at that time, he did not see that I had opened the door. He honked first time, then again and again. In my hurry, I forgot my mobile phone which was being charged. Then at my sister-in-law's place, I changed my clothes to go to Ongs' Clans where they were having some prayers for the ancestors. I lighted some joss sticks and quickly left with my nephew to go to KL Tower. Again, in my hurry, I left my clothes in his van.

Heard of Ada Lovelace?

Billions of people now use computers. Most of them are just users of desktop computers and notebooks and they relied on software prepared by computer scientists who need to know computer programming. Not many know programming rely on a mathematical sequence known as Bernoulli numbers which was discovered by Ada Lovelace in the nineteenth century!

Ada Lovelace voted most popular technology heroine

Ada Lovelace met Charles Babbage in 1833.

By Zoe Kleinman
Technology reporter, BBC News

Ada Lovelace has emerged as the most popular role model in a day dedicated to celebrating women working in the fields of science and technology.

So far, 2,239 people around the world have posted blogs, videos and podcasts online nominating their heroines.

Additionally, events were held in London, Copenhagen, Dresden, Montreal and Brazil to mark the day, named after Ms Lovelace, held on 24 March.

Ada Lovelace worked with mathematician Charles Babbage in the 1800s.

Mr Babbage's invention, the Analytical Engine, formed the basis of modern computing.

Ada Lovelace is therefore credited with writing the world's first computer program when she came up with a way of using the machine, which was never actually built, to calculate a mathematical sequence.

Understanding sex...

You have to hand it to the ancient Indian rishis for their deep understanding of life.

Maharishi Vatsyayan has stated in his magnum opus "Kamasutra" that ...Sex is…

"Duty", if done with your Wife

"Art", if done with your Lover

"Education", if done with a Virgin

"Business Transaction", if done with a Prostitute

"Social Work", if done with a Divorcee

"Charity", if done with a Widow &

"Meditative Trance", if done by yourself.

Mother of all advice on forwarding emails...

All re-senders of emails, Please take a few minutes to read the following information concerning the re-sending or ‘forwarding’ the emails we receive from friends and relatives.

Here is something everyone should read and take the advice. If you don't, you're hurting yourself and your email buddies.

By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with and/or for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites.
Advice from Snopes.com very important!

1. Any time you see an email that says, “Forward this on to '10' (or however many) of your friends”; “Sign this petition, or you'll get bad luck/good luck”; “You'll see something funny on your screen after you send it”; or whatever, it almost always has an email tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those folks you forward to. The host sender is
getting a copy each time it gets forwarded and then is able to get lists of 'active' email addresses to use in SPAM emails, or sell to other spammers.

Even when you get emails that demand you send the email on if you're not ashamed of God/Jesus ...that's email tracking and they're playing on your conscience. These people don't care how they get your email addresses - just as long as they get them.

2. Also, emails that talk about a missing child or a child with an incurable disease – "how would you feel if that was your child?" ...Email Tracking!!! Ignore them and don't participate! Almost all emails that ask you to add your name and forward on to others are similar to that mass letter years ago that asked people to send business cards to the little kid in Florida who wanted to break the Guinness Book of Records for the most cards. All it was, and all any of this type of email is, is a way to get names and 'cookie' tracking information for telemarketers and spammers - to validate active email accounts for their own profitable purposes. You can do your friends and family members a GREAT favour by sending this information to them; you will be providing a service to your friends, and will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam emails in the future!

If you have been sending out (FORWARDING) the above kinds of email, now you know why you get so much SPAM!

Do yourself a favour and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listings regardless how inviting they might sound, or make you feel guilty if you don t! It's all about getting email addresses - nothing more!

You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT! Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a virus attached! Plus, you are helping the spammers get rich! Let's stop making it easy for them!

Also: email petitions are NOT acceptable to Government, or any other organisation – i.e. social security, etc. To be acceptable, petitions must have a signed signature and full address of the person signing the petition, so this is a waste of time and you're just helping the email trackers.

And here’s another take on the subject:

IMPORTANT!! HOW TO FORWARD EMAIL APPROPRIATELY

A friend who is a computer expert received the following directly from a system administrator for a corporate system. It is an excellent message that ABSOLUTELY applies to ALL of us who send emails. Please read the short letter below, even if you're sure you already follow proper procedures.

“Do you really know how to forward emails? 50% do; 50% DO NOT.

Do you wonder why you get viruses or junk mail? Do you hate it? Every time you forward an email there is information left over from the people who got the message before you, namely their email addresses & names. As the messages get forwarded along, the list of addresses builds, and builds, and builds, and all it takes is for some poor sap to get a virus, and his or her computer can send that virus to every email address that has come across his computer. Or, someone can take all of those addresses and sell them or send junk mail to them in the hopes that you will go to the site and he will make five cents for each hit. That's right, all of that inconvenience over five cents. How do you stop it? Well, there are several easy steps:

(1) When you forward an email, DELETE all of the other addresses that appear in the body of the message (at the top). That's right, DELETE them. Highlight them and delete them, backspace them, cut them, whatever it is you know how to do. It only takes a second. You MUST click the 'Forward' button first and then you will have full editing capabilities against the body and headers of the message. If you don't click on 'Forward' first, you won't be able to edit the message at all.
(2) Whenever you send an email to more than one person, do NOT use the To: or Cc: fields for adding email addresses. Always use the BCC: (blind carbon copy)field for listing the email addresses. This is the way the people you send to will only see their own email address.
If you don't see your BCC: option click on where it says To: and your address list will appear. Highlight the address and choose BCC: and that's it, it's that easy. When you send to BCC: your message will automatically say 'Undisclosed Recipients' in the 'TO:' field of the people who receive it.
(3) Remove any 'FW :' in the subject line. You can re-name the subject if you wish or even fix spelling.
(4) ALWAYS hit your Forward button from the actual email you are reading. Ever get those emails that you have to open 10 pages to read the one page with the information on it? By Forwarding from the actual page you wish someone to view, you stop them from having to open many emails just to see what you sent.
(5) Have you ever got an email that is a petition? It states a position and asks you to add your name and address and to forward it to 10 or 15 people or your entire address book. The email can be forwarded on and on and can collect thousands of names and email addresses.
A FACT: The completed petition is actually worth a couple of bucks to a professional spammer because of the wealth of valid names and email addresses contained therein. If you want to support the petition, send it as your own personal letter to the intended recipient. Your position may carry more weight as a personal letter than a laundry list of names and email address on a petition. (Actually, if you think about it, who's supposed to send the petition in to whatever cause it supports? And don't believe the ones that say that the email is being traced, it just ain't so!)
(6) One of the main ones I hate is the ones that say that something like, 'Send this email to 10 people and you'll see something great run across your screen.' Or, sometimes they'll just tease you by saying something really cute will happen.
IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN!!!!! (Trust me, I'm still seeing some of the same ones that I waited on 10 years ago!) I don't let the bad luck ones scare me either, they get trashed.
(7) Before you forward an Amber Alert, or a Virus Alert, or some of the other ones floating around nowadays, check them out before you forward them. Most of them are junk mail that's been circling the net for YEARS! Just about everything you receive in an email that is in question can be checked out at Snopes. Just go to http://www.snopes.com/”
Its really easy to find out if it's real or not. If it's not, please don't pass it on. So please, in the future, let's stop the junk mail and the viruses.
Finally, here's an idea!!! Let's send this to everyone we know (but strip my address off first, please). And send them using the Bcc (Blind Carbon Copy.) This is something that SHOULD be forwarded.

Best wishes
A Good Friend --VS

We can not only compete with others...

but actually excel in competitions.

But our leaders refused to know. Education is the key to progress, yet they would prefer to pander to the majority for political expediency to maintain their control in the country.

Thanks to unfair systems in education, employment and business in Malaysia, for those who got out of the country they had freedom of choice and equal opportunities, depending on their own abilities and their adopted country's economy. Even if they failed, they do not feel bitter because they know they competed on a level playing field.

It is not a bed of roses out there. I have come across Accounting graduates in Australia who are still waiting for the right jobs to be professional qualified, when local graduates could easily get jobs in the Big Four and most had the choice of Singapore, and especially China, if Chinese educated before.

Many working overseas do not own houses or cars but for the sake of earning foreign currencies with high exchange rates. Out of the many who 'jumped planes' (a term to describe so-called tourists who bought two-way tickets but used only one) there are bound to have some who made good - owning restaurants and other businesses.

Anyway, from Sin Chew:

When the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination results were released last year, the country's leading Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao used the headline: Top O-Level student again a Malaysian”. I was attracted by the word “again”.

Her name is Lai Kai Rou and same as top student last year Haw Sue Hern, she studied in S.R.J.K (C) Lick Hung before going to study in Singapore.

The report stressed that in S.R.J.K (C) Lick Hung, everything is taught in Chinese except for English subject. I would like to add that S.R.J.K (C) Lick Hung is a Chinese primary school.
Lai, who has again won glory for the country, is one of the 17 foreign students among the 43 top O-Level scorers.

I must mention here that among the above-mentioned 17 foreign students, 11 of them are from China and six of them are Malaysians. The number is equal to 40% of the 43 top scorers.
Singaporeans exclaimed in surprise. They wondered why there were so many foreigners among the top scorers.

At the same time, we also exclaimed in surprise. We wondered why so many top students have gone to Singapore.

Singaporeans were wondering why the top O-Level student was not a Singaporean and why Singaporean students were lack of spirit compared to foreign students.

Meanwhile, we were wondering why we always lose talents.

Lai said: “I like the freedom given by the peaceful Singapore, it allows me to move around without worry.”

In fact, leaving home is no longer about the pain of “homesick” but the freedom without fear! Of course, a little girl's way of thinking is relatively simple.

For her parents (both graduates of the University of Malaya), studying in Singapore allows her to enjoy other freedoms. For example, the freedom of choosing a university, the freedom of choosing a major and the freedom of getting a scholarship based on academic results without the so-called quota system and colour distinction.

How many Malaysian students, like Lai and her younger brother, have been flocking to further their studies in Singapore right after they have completed their primary schools with the scholarship provided by Singapore every year?

And how many Malaysian students from Chinese independent high schools (second-class students and copycats for Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and historian and academician Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim) have been enrolled into prestigious universities of the Lion City every year and end up settling down while contributing to the prosperity of the country?

There are many shining stars who are originated from Malaysia in Singapore.
For example, founder, Group Chief Executive Officer, and President of the Singapore-based Hyflux Group, Olivia Lum used to be an orphan from Perak; and Chief Executive Officer of Jetstar Asia Chong Phit Lian was just a little girl selling pineapples at her own doorstep in Kulai, Johor when she was six.

The current Health Minister of Singapore Khaw Boon Wan is also originated from Malaysia. He used to study in the Penang Chung Ling High School.

In fact, there are too many similar stories to tell.

(By LIM MUN FAH/Translated by SOONG PHUI JEE/Sin Chew Daily)

I wish to relate a recent conversation between our part-time cleaner and my wife:

wife: I heard from someone now our top students come from our local Chinese school because most parents sent them there instead of government schools, unlike our daughters' time. Yet I just heard from the tractor man that there is a bus ferrying students to another Chinese school because our local one has got a reputation of bad discipline now.

cleaner: Ya loh, every year at least one student gets pregnant. Boys and girls are openly showing their affection in embrace. Now parents send their girls to Convent... because no boys there mah!

How we wish our oil revenues were better managed

instead of squandered.

The Norwegians were overly conservative (imagine saving for future generations) and the direct opposites of the Arab countries (known for their ostentatious display of their opulence), while our country is somewhere in between - providing half the government's revenues and not disclosing where the rest of the revenues went... until one day, our future generations are going to complain about the debts we left behind.

'The Government Pension Fund - Global (Norwegian: Statens pensjonsfond utland, SPU) is a fund into which the surplus wealth produced by Norwegian petroleum income is deposited. The fund changed name in January 2006 from its previous name The Petroleum Fund of Norway.

The fund is commonly referred to as The Petroleum Fund (Norwegian: Oljefondet). As of the valuation in June 2007, it was the largest pension fund in Europe and the fourth largest in the world, although it is not actually a pension fund as it derives its financial backing from oil profits and not pension contributions. As of 30 September 2009 its total value is NOR 2.549 trillion ($455Bn), holding 0.77 per cent of global equity equity markets. With 1.25 per cent of European stocks, it is said to be the largest stock owner in Europe. Despite the influx of oil money, Norway has not reduced their taxes nor have they introduced subsidies or use the money for white-elephants projects. They have kept their oil profits for the future generations of Norwegians.'

What the Arabs are known for...
It's a Mercedes Benz owned by an Abu Dhabi OIL billionaire (naturally).

Featuring the newly developed V10 quad turbo with 1,600 horsepower and 2800nm of torque
0-100km/h in less than 2secs, 1/4 mile in 6.89 secs running on biofuel.

That is NOT stainless steel, people; it is WHITE GOLD!

Is it possible to create a perfect relationship?

The following appears to be a compilation from various sources relevant to the topic:

A person visited the government matchmaker for marriage, SDU, and requested 'I am looking for a spouse. Please help me to find a suitable one.'

The SDU officer said, 'Your requirements, please.'

'Oh, good looking, polite, humorous , sporty, knowledgeable, good in singing and dancing. Willing to accompany me the whole day at home during my leisure hour, if I don't go out. Telling me interesting stories when I need companion for conversation and be silent when I want to rest.'
The officer listened carefully and replied, 'I understand you need television.'

There is a saying that a perfect match can only be found between a blind wife and a deaf husband, because the blind wife cannot see the faults of the husband and the deaf husband cannot hear the nagging of the wife.

Many couples are blind and deaf at the courting stage and dream of perpetual perfect relationship. Unfortunately, when the excitement of love wears off, they wake up and discover that marriage is not a bed of roses. The nightmare begins.
A man asked his father-in-law, 'Many people praised you for a successful marriage. Could you please share with me your secret?'
The father-in-law answered in a smile, 'Never criticize your wife for her shortcomings or when she does something wrong. Always bear in mind that because of her shortcomings and weaknesses, she could not find a better husband than you.'

We all look forward to being loved and respected. Many people are afraid of losing face. Generally, when a person makes a mistake, he would look around to find a scapegoat to point the finger at. This is the start of a war. We should always remember that when we point one finger at a person, the other four fingers are pointing at ourselves.

If we forgive the others, others will ignore our mistake too.

Many relationships fail because one party tries to overpower another, or demands too much. People in love tend to think that love will conquer all and their spouses will change the bad habits after marriage. Actually, this is not the case. There is a Chinese saying which carries the meaning that 'It is easier to reshape a mountain or a river than a person's character.'

It is not easy to change. Thus, having high expectation on changing the spouse character will cause disappointment and unpleasantness.

It would be less painful to change ourselves and lower our expectations.

There is a Chinese saying which carries the meaning that 'A speech will either prosper or ruin a nation.' Many relationships break off because of wrong speech. When a couple is too close with each other, we always forget mutual respect and courtesy. We may say anything without considering if it would hurt the other party.

A friend and her millionaire husband visited their construction site. A worker who wore a helmet saw her and shouted, 'Hi, Emily! Remember me? We used to date in the secondary school.' On the way home, her millionaire husband teased her, 'Luckily you married me. Otherwise you will be the wife of a construction worker.' She answered,'You should appreciate that you married me. Other wise, he will be the millionaire and not you.'

Frequently exchanging these remarks plants the seed for a bad relationship. It's like a broken egg - cannot be reversed.

My attempt at answering the question : Not possible, because a relationship involves two persons with different personalities and expectations which are continuously changing. Any perfect moment if at all possible, can only be momentary. 'Give and take' seems to be the key to a lasting relationship.

MBPJ, not cut our palm trees

Just imagine my utter shock and disappointment when the palm trees which were only about 6 feet tall and which we could not wait to have them taller to block against the high tension wire pylon, were cut down instead! The person who did the job just did not have any common sense.

MBPJ, we want you to cut this

near Asia Jaya LRT station...

Three weeks ago, we went to MBPJ Aduan counter to complain about this overgrown tree behind the row of houses on Jalan 14/1 Petaling Jaya, because of the danger of the branches breaking and damaging the house roof. We were told to expect it to be done within 1 month, and only trimming of the branches, not cutting the tree. Fair enough. We thought our instruction was clear too.

When someone told you not to talk...

there must be a reason...

Wanda's dishwasher quit working so she called a repairman.

Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, 'I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a cheque.'

'Oh, by the way don't worry about my dog Spike. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, do Not, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot! I REPEAT, DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!'

When the repairman arrived at Wanda's apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking dog he had ever seen

But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.

The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling.

Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, ' Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!'

To which the parrot replied, 'Get him, Spike!'

A talk that I missed...

Excerpts from a talk, The Conquest of happiness' given by Mr. Koon Yew Yin in Ipoh, organized by Perak Academy:

What is envy?

Bertrand Russell said envy is one of the most potent causes of unhappiness. It is a universal and most unfortunate aspect of human nature because not only is the envious person rendered unhappy, he also wishes to inflict misfortune on others.

Although envy is generally seen as something negative, it can nonetheless be a driving force for man to perform better or improve himself.

Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder are often envious of others or they believe others are envious of him or her. Aristotle defined ‘envy’ as pain caused by the good fortune of others.

‘Envy’ and ‘jealousy’ are often used interchangeably, but in their correct usage, the words stand for two different and distinct emotions. Jealousy is the fear of losing a loved one to a rival, while envy is the frustration caused by another person having something that one does not have.

Envy typically involves two persons, and jealousy involves three. “Thou shall not covet thy neighbour’s wife, slaves or donkey” is the seventh Commandment delivered by Moses. In Islam, envy (hassad in Arabic) can destroy one’s good deeds and therefore, one must be content with what God has given by saying Maashallah (God has willed it).

According to the Buddha, “Mind is the forerunner of states of existence. Mind is chief, and (those states) are caused by the mind. If one speaks and acts with a pure mind, surely happiness will follow like one’s own shadow!”

In Buddhism, the third of the Four Noble Truths states “to eliminate suffering, eliminate craving.” Thus, its teachings establish happiness as beyond material and emotional possession, and attainable only through an attentive practice by which craving and aversion are extinguished.

Bertrand Russell’s 14 steps

First you must know how to conquer unhappiness.

1. Don’t be taken in by melancholy

Melancholy is only a passing mood; don’t mistake it for wisdom. Prolonged sadness can lead to mental depression, a sickness associated with suicidal tendency. You must believe that you can change your mood simply by doing something different – play a game or talk to a good friend for diversion.

2. Don't get caught in the competitive treadmill

Life is always a struggle. You compete in school, in university and at work … always wanting to do better and making more money. You really do not need so much to be happy. You must know when to stop chasing material possessions and learn to be contented. You cannot be happy if you are still greedy for more and more.

Feeling happy is the only true success. Don’t work so hard until you forget how to be happy.

3. Develop the right attitude to boredom and excitement

Everyone has a natural fear of boredom. That is why one always has the urge to find things to do. Very few people can just sit down, do nothing and simply enjoy peace and tranquility (but give it a try!). Do not fear a little boredom for a certain amount of boredom in life is to be expected.

The opposite of boredom is excitement but be careful in seeking it. Incidentally, there is a recent news report from Australia that the easy availability of Viagra and other stimulants has raised the level of sexual activity amongst senior citizens (that is, those over 75) to exceptional levels of excitement. Just imagine that. Excitement is best sought in small doses and in the right places.

4. Make your worries concrete, don’t suppress them

Get a sense of perspective. Ask yourself “what is the worst thing that can possibly happen?” For example if your doctor tells you that your disease is incurable, you must realise that worry will not make you better. The best you can do is to find enjoyment every day for whatever life you have left.

On the other hand though, when you have a difficult problem, do not suppress it because it will not go away by itself. Face it, grapple with it and try to find a way to resolve it. Do what you can and believe that it will be alright when the time comes. Remember! Prolonged worrying can cause mental depression.

5. Don’t envy, admire!

Since I have already touched on envy and jealousy at the start of my talk, I only wish to add this: Enjoy what you have for its own sake. Don’t compare yourself with others who are more successful than you.

When you are sad, compare yourself with people who are in a worse situation.

More where that came from:

In other words...

Most, would have been through this at one time or other... as a prospective son-in-law or daughter-in-law, being introduced to future parents-in-law. I have been through it before, and at my present age, have been through as a prospective father-in-law too... though not necessarily successful! My wife used to quote another in a similar situation, 'Don't bring them back unless you are serious with the person!' But nobody can tell how it would turn out later and I am sure the new generation guys and gals have their own problems of matching personalities and careers which could take them far apart for unhealthily long periods.

There are cases where future uncles and aunts were asked for opinions, some gave theirs without having to ask. Generally, once steady, most will be polite enough to give positive opinions unless, by nature, he or she is used to calling a spade a spade. But what a difference it makes when it did not turn out! All the 'I told you so' and 'I knew...', etc. will be heard.

The following story is just one example, and supposed to be funny:

God will provide

A young woman brought her fiancé home to meet her parents. After dinner, her mother told her father to find out about the young man.

The father invited the fiancé to his study for a talk.
"So what do you do for a living?" the father asked the young man.

"I am a biblical scholar," he replied.

"A Biblical scholar. Hmm........", the father said. "Admirable, but what will you do to provide a nice house for my daughter to live in?"

"I will study," the young man replied, "and God will provide for us."

"And how will you buy her a beautiful engagement ring, such as she deserves?" asked the father.

"I will concentrate on my studies," the young man replied, "God will provide for us."

"And children?" asked the father. "How will you support children?"

"Don't worry Sir, God will provide," replied the fiancé.

The conversation proceeded like this and each time the father questioned, the young idealist insisted that God would provide.

Later, the mother asked, "How did it go Honey?"

The father answered, "He has no job, no plans and he thinks I'm God!!"

A nurse's hypocritical oath...

Nurses aren't supposed to laugh...

"Of course I won't laugh," said the nurse. "I'm a professional. In over twenty years I've never laughed at a patient."

"Okay then," said Fred, and he proceeded to drop his trousers, revealing the tiniest 'man thingy' the nurse had ever seen.

Unable to control herself the nurse giggled, then started laughing. Five minutes later she was able to regain her composure.

"I am so sorry," she said. "I don't know what came over me. On my honour as a nurse and a lady, I promise it won't happen again. Now, tell me, what seems to be the problem?"

"It's swollen," Fred replied.

She could not control herself and ran out of the room...

How useful are rules and regulations?

I can still remember working in a small developer's office and there were no problems selling houses because demand far exceeded supply in each project. No problems with poor design of houses. Though our company followed proper rules in terms of licence and advertising permits, there were those who could sell without them. Advice and suggestions were given to the public on how to pick developers eg. licensed, etc. etc. But when faced with the lack of supply, who would follow the checklist?

When Proton cars went on sale in the early years, people who booked their cars had to accept cars with accessories (no choice) as well as in different colours. Why? Because demand exceeded supply then. When Perdana first rolled out, people were willing to pay Rm10,000 more to get it!

Similarly, we have prices set for certain food items, especially during festive seasons. Minister would be seen on television checking prices in markets and so on. But when you are actually buying, it is a 'take it or leave it' situation. If what you want is something very important for the occasion, do you mind paying more for it? Eg. for Chinese New Year, roast pork has to be ordered in advance at a premium price. If you did not order, would you mind paying more to get it if you have some guests who really like it?

By the way, advice on how to protect ourselves against car thieves and robberies is only good to a certain extent. With all the extra good locks installed, you need just one person with a gun or just a knife or parang and you would willingly let him have your car! What we need is good enforcement of law and order, otherwise, it is like Russian roulette - a game of chance. We can only hope and pray that it will not happen to us.

Greenpeace UK and Nestle's use of palm oil

Hi there,

Wow. There are several other words I could use to express my amazement at the response to our campaign about Nestlé's use of palm oil, but none of them are fit to write here, so "wow" will have to do for now.

Since Wednesday morning - when we launched our controversial Kit Kat advert and demanded that Nestlé stop using palm oil from companies destroying Indonesia's rainforests - events have unfolded rapidly, and everyone at Greenpeace is amazed at how our supporters have taken this so much further than we ever imagined. Here's a quick recap:

  • Nestlé told Youtube to pull our video due to copyright infringement. It was later reinstated, but not before we'd uploaded it elsewhere and asked supporters to do the same. Current number of views: 585,000 and counting.
  • Facebook users went to Nestlé's fan page to ask what the company was doing about their palm oil suppliers, where they were met with rude and arrogant responses from the company. Word of this spread like wildfire around the internet, and has been the talk of many high-profile blogs and news websites.
  • Thousands of people around the world sent Nestlé CEO Paul Bulcke emails, but we've discovered that Nestlé blocked many of these. Now, emails are going to André Kudelski, a member of the board of directors, and we're working out what to do with the ones which didn't get through.

Nestlé have issued a statement saying that they'll stop buying directly from the worst supplier, Sinar Mas, but this doesn't go far enough as much of their palm oil comes through third parties, like Cargill, who continue to buy palm oil from Sinar Mas.

Your actions are having a big impact at Nestlé HQ. If you haven't already, email Nestlé now demanding they stop using palm oil and other products from the notorious Sinar Mas. We had some technical problems with our website on Wednesday so if you weren't able to send your email, it's working absolutely fine now.

And don't forget to share our Kit Kat video with your friends.

Thanks for your support,

Jamie Woolley
