I find the following article useful in illustrating how the more 'progressive' West Malaysia had progressively polarized the different races with their discriminating policies over the years. In fact, I would add that religion played a major role in separating the major races. What used to be acceptable in the past is not so in the national schools where food is concerned.

I would also blame Astro for enticing the Chinese and Indians with their favourite Chinese, Hindi and Tamil movies which has the effect of avoiding national television programmes and living in their own worlds. But, can we blame them for avoiding BN propaganda on television and other news media?
My three children were all educated in national schools, and their problems with race started when some Malay classmates were accepted in special schools and colleges, then on scholarships, then employment, and so on.
The pre-requisites for unity should be in place before we can expect it from the people. When I was young, I wondered about the race-based political parties... and I am still wondering why they are still in existence. I wondered about the contradictory statements made by the leaders, about equality, equal opportunities and so on, and I am still wondering why leaders can tell lies with straight faces.
