My mother used to tell me this story of a daughter-in-law who complained that she just did not know what her mother-in-law wanted. When she cooked bee hoon (rice vermicelli), MiL complained it was not salty enough, when she cooked mee sua (similar but made from wheat?), MiL complained it was too salty. The truth of the matter was the fact that mee sua itself is salty and there was no need to add salt to it. But my recent experience proved otherwise, as the mee sua on its own wasn't salty. Might be isolated case to do with that brand.
With today's women, MiL is just someone to be tolerated, not necessarily respected.
